Mary Coogan

Trad Master/Instructor – Guitar

Mary Coogan is a highly respected guitarist, mandolinist, and bouzouki player, best known as a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Irish music group Cherish the Ladies.

Born in New York and raised in a deeply musical household, Mary’s mother hailed from Castlerea, County Roscommon, and her father Jim—an accomplished accordion player—passed down his passion for Irish traditional music. Inspired by this musical legacy, Mary became a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, mastering the guitar, mandolin, and bouzouki.

Mary holds a Master’s degree in Education and was honored in Who’s Who Among American Teachers. She has recorded several albums, including her solo release Christmas, a duo album with her father titled Passing Time, and The Big Ship Sails, a beloved children’s music collection created with her longtime friend Kathy Ludlowe.

Named one of the top four Celtic guitarists by Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Mary is renowned for her sensitive accompaniment and rhythmic precision. She continues to share her passion for music through teaching, inspiring young musicians across New York.
