Mirella Murray

Trad Master/Instructor – Piano Accordion

Mirella Murray is a celebrated piano accordionist from Claddaghduff, on the northwest coast of Connemara in County Galway, and one of the most respected tradition bearers in Irish music today.

Her father, John Joe Murray, a renowned sean-nós dancer from Inishark Island, passed on a deep love and understanding of traditional Irish music that helped shape Mirella’s musical journey. She studied accordion with the esteemed Mary Finn and developed a strong musical partnership with fiddler Liz Kane, with whom she won both the All-Ireland Accordion Championship and the Duet Championship.

Mirella recorded Three Sunsets with the great Clare fiddler Tola Custy, a highly acclaimed album voted one of the year’s top five by The Irish Times. Her performance credits include international festivals across Europe and Russia, the Galway Arts Festival, and she was a featured soloist in the OBIE Award-winning off-Broadway production of Peter & Wendy, adapted by the late Johnny Cunningham.

As a teacher, Mirella’s impact is remarkable—twenty-two of her students have earned All-Ireland titles, a testament to her nurturing approach and technical expertise. Mirella’s vast repertoire, gathered through years of travel and collaboration, includes rare and distinctive tunes, many of which have been adopted by acclaimed artists such as Sharon Shannon, Lúnasa, and The Bumblebees.
